FEBRUARY 14th SYNDROME

I am so excited to talk about this very controversial topic. This day (February 14th) is the highlight of February except for Champions league, lol! It marks the honoring of Saint Valentine, hence the name Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day.

According to Wikipedia Saint Valentine's Day, commonly known as Valentine's Day, or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world.
St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named 'Valentinus'. The most popular martyr ology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote "from your Valentine" as a farewell to her.Today, Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine's Day, albeit on July 6th and July 30th, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni).

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

So in summary we can say the day is CELEBRATED by showing acts of love to people around us especially those we share romantic feelings and following tradition, sharing gifts. We can obviously do more than just sharing gifts. The day in itself is not as unimportant as some people say neither should you kill yourself to meet up to ‘expectations’. I remember one time in my 2nd year in the university, my friend told me about her roommate who was STARVING herself just so she could have enough money to get her boyfriend a particular brand of designer shirt and perfume. I am happy she can sacrifice her ‘stomach’ for love, lol but the motive of trying so hard to blend in is wrong. A lot of people would prefer to showoff-I also heard of a popular Nigerian artiste that claimed to make everyone jealous once we see his gift to his partner. He has turned away from the purpose of showing love to showing off.

1 Corinthians 13:4b says love is not puffed up or seeks its own. We must not lose focus that the essence should be on LOVE.

We could easily be caught up with the materialism syndrome. Understand your partner if he or she cannot get you those wonderful gifts, does not have the resources to do so, don’t be ANGRY OR UPSET(also you should explain to your partner your ability)and both of you could discuss on something to do, spending quality time together just talking can really help a lot in building the relationship. Don’t let you self-esteem or heart be attached to just what you can get on gifts and presents. The most important factor I want to highlight here is how well we can show or receive love. How can that be in we have not found solace in HIM who is love HIMSELF-GOD. 1John 4:8, 1 John 4:16As Gods creations, we have this vacuum (put there by God) and only He can fill this void. We can get all the gifts, words, attention and affection but nothing is completely fulfilling till we have fallen in love with God.As I wrap up my first post I say we FIND GOD. Only life with Him and a strong relationship with Him can cure our heart aches, help our earnest desires, build our self-worth /esteem redirect us from searching for love in the wrong places (drinking, illicit sex etc.) and make every other relationship blissful.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

CELEBRATE YOU

  1. Great post. God is Love & He showed us the perfect example by giving His only Son for the redemption of our souls. He never started loving us & will never stop. Let us make a difference not only to loved ones, but to people who don't even have loved ones in the spirit of the season.
