What Do Mature Christians Have In Common?

Thursday, May 09, 2013

Chances are that if you've been attending church for a while (say 2 years maybe) they'll be certain Christians that you'll be admiring by now. These Christians are people who to you are so "spiritual" that you'll probably be wondering things like, "that guy is living fire. I wish I could be like that". It's normal to want to better yourself and every reasonable Christian must seek to better himself but wishing to become a better person doesn't make you a better person, behaving like a better person makes you a better person. Therefore role models are useless if you’re not going to model your life after them, Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1-2, "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ."

So follow what? What are we as Christians meant to see and emulate in the people that we look up to? I thought about what common traits successful Christians share with each other it occurred to me that every Christian who has walked with God successfully has ALL these traits, every single one of them. I'm not talking about popular Christians but successful Christians, people who have clearly shown that they are fruitful over the years. I compiled a list of them that I want to share with you so read along and get ready to start adjusting your life;

1- Prayer: nobody can claim to know someone he doesn't communicate with; all successful Christians know this and devote so much time to doing this everyday. Funny thing is that nobody is used to praying at first but they all discipline themselves (more on that later) and overcome the natural laziness to do this. Even though when they start it doesn't make sense they always still keep at it until it does.

2- Fasting: Since the concept of fasting is denying the body what it needs so that the Spirit can grow in strength it then follows that the most spiritual people would fast a lot. You will never find any great man of God (not necessarily a Pastor) that doesn't live a life of fasting and prayer.

3- Study of the Word: 1 Peter 2:2 says, "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:" again if growth is gotten by studying the Word of God then it follows that the most spiritual people as in the case of fasting would also study their bibles a lot. These people are led by the Word, it's firmly written in their hearts and no wonder David says in Psalm 119:11, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." It’s important to know that they not only study but spend an enormous amount of time meditating on the Word.

4- Discipline: people naturally misjudge disciplined people, that's because they are not disciplined people themselves so when they hear someone say, "I don't hug women" they scoff. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with hugging women but people express their discipline in many ways and as the Christian becomes consecrated more and more and shows discipline his thoughts, words and actions it should be applauded instead of mocked. That's why most people are not growing.
